What this work prepares
Weld qualification
Macro and micro examination of procedure-qualification and production welds: fusion boundary, heat-affected zone, root and cap. Usually a macro-etched section photographed to a code requirement.
Duplex and super-duplex phase balance
Ferrite/austenite ratio by point count or image analysis. The measurement is destroyed by a preparation that relieves one phase against the other, which is the single most common reason a duplex result is disputed.
Corrosion and failure assessment
Pitting, stress-corrosion cracking, hydrogen damage and sulphide stress cracking in sour service. Edge retention matters because the damage is at the surface.
Coating and cladding integrity
Weld overlay and cladding thickness, dilution and bond line. Two materials of different hardness meeting at a line.
