What this work prepares

Reinforcing bar and structural steel

Microstructure and decarburisation on plain carbon and low-alloy grades. Ordinary metallography, in quantity, against a written acceptance criterion.

Galvanised and metallic coatings

Coating thickness measured on a cross-section, where the coating is soft, the substrate is not, and the boundary between them is the measurement.

Fasteners and welded connections

Thread form, case depth on high-tensile fasteners, and macro sections of structural welds.

Failure investigation on site materials

Something has cracked, and the question is whether the material met the specification. Usually urgent and usually documentary.
